The Caprese salad is one of my favorite dishes in its class and simplicity. It's quick and easy to prepare, but also has a significant visual impact that makes any table more cheerful and inviting.
The name "Caprese" comes from the island of Capri in Italy, where this dish is believed to have originated. It embodies the freshness and vibrant colors of the island, making it a beloved classic in Italian cuisine.
Ingredients (serves 4):
- 4 ripe, firm tomatoes (about 600 grams)
- 2 buffalo mozzarellas (about 250 grams each)
- Fresh basil leaves or dried oregano
- Salt to taste
Preparation:
1. Prepare the ingredients:
- Wash the tomatoes well and dry them. Slice them into 0.5 cm thick slices.
- Drain the mozzarella and slice it into 0.5 cm thick slices.
2. Assemble the salad:
- On a serving plate, alternate the tomato and mozzarella slices, slightly overlapping them to create a horizontal "salami" arrangement.
3. Seasoning:
- Evenly drizzle the Le Ferre multivarietal extra virgin olive oil over the tomato and mozzarella slices. This oil, with its moderate spiciness, perfectly complements the southern flavors of the dish, adding a note of intensity without overpowering them.
- Add a pinch of salt.
- Garnish with fresh basil leaves or, if you prefer, a pinch of dried oregano to further evoke Italian flavors.
4. Final touch (optional):
- If desired, add a few drops of "Etichetta Bianca" balsamic vinegar from Acetaia Sereni. This element adds a pleasant note of sweetness and enhances the dish's beauty with its dark notes.
5. Serve:
- Serve the Caprese salad immediately at room temperature, accompanied by fresh bread or croutons.
To make the dish more substantial, you can add a few slices of Parma ham or, if you prefer (or very hungry :) ), some slices of Voglietta Classica italian salami from Salumificio Pavullese. This adds an extra touch of flavor, making the dish even richer and more inviting.
This Caprese salad, with its homage to the Italian flag, is perfect as an appetizer or side dish, bringing a touch of freshness and authenticity to your table.
Buon appetito!
